Personalized Learning at Abbotsford Virtual School

October 21, 2024

Abbotsford Virtual School (AVS) is a Provincial Online School that serves school-aged and adult students from across the province, catering to those who thrive in a digital learning environment. We offer a flexible curriculum that allows kindergarten through grade 12 students to engage in their studies at their own pace, making it an ideal option for those needing a flexible, non-traditional schooling experience.  We have three main groups of students at AVS: fully enrolled learners, adult learners and cross-enrolled learners. We emphasize personalized learning, enabling students to pursue their individual interests and learning styles while meeting provincial educational standards.

Our fully enrolled students from grades 6-10 can apply to our Fusion program and attend on-site twice a week. Depending on the grade level, the Fusion program combines our traditional academic courses with electives such as Media Design, Art and Robotics, where you will hear students engaging in lessons about the impacts and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence or the hum of our 3D printers bringing the latest student project to life. AVS also offers a Home-Based Learners program that has our Kindergarten to grade 8 students on campus one day a week. This experience is a unique and valuable option for families seeking a flexible educational path for their children by providing a combination of a supportive community with a structured academic plan.  Finally, our K-12 students have the option to be fully virtual, offering families the ultimate flexibility in their learning.

AVS allows adult learners to engage with and earn credits for most grade 11 and 12 courses.  Our adult learners could be students who have recently graduated from a traditional high school but require a higher grade for a specific post-secondary program, students a few credits short of graduation or even those who have taken some time away from school and are hoping to earn their adult graduation.

Finally, AVS serves grade 10-12 cross-enrolled students from across the province. A cross-enrolled student is fully enrolled in a traditional high school but elects to take a course with us, an invaluable option because it provides flexibility to take a single course that their regular high school might not offer. This may be due to conflicts in the student’s schedule, the course not being offered in their home school, or they may not have been successful the first time through and don’t want to disrupt their schedule the following year. Cross-enrolling is done in consultation with their school counsellor.

Staff at AVS are thrilled to provide this educational experience for students while continuing to seek ways to engage, challenge and prepare students for a lifetime of success.
